Three-Dimensional Photochemical Printing of Thermally Activated Polymer Foams

Soyoung E. Seo et al.

Summary: A two-step process involving initial 3D photopolymerization and subsequent thermal processing is used to create thermally activated polymer foams with tunable pore size and volume fraction. By adjusting the cross-link density of the matrix network, it is possible to control pore size and material mechanics, achieving customized design of foam with complex geometries and porosity.

3D Printing of Supramolecular Polymer Hydrogels with Hierarchical Structure

Nicholas A. Sather et al.

Summary: Liquid crystalline hydrogels can be 3D printed from aqueous supramolecular polymer inks, with pH and salt concentration influencing intermolecular interactions and ink viscosity. Enhanced hierarchical interactions in high viscosity inks lead to greater nanoscale alignment, enabling the creation of materials with anisotropic properties and scaffolds that promote cell alignment.

3D-Printed Bioplastics with Shape-Memory Behavior Based on Native Bovine Serum Albumin

Eva Sanchez-Rexach et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method of using a resin based on bovine serum albumin for 3D printing to produce bioplastic objects with shape-memory behavior. By retaining the native conformation of proteins, the stored length of each protein molecule can be observed after mechanical deformation, and the original shape can be restored through heating or immersion.

Tough Multimaterial Interfaces through Wavelength-Selective 3D Printing

Neil D. Dolinski et al.

Summary: In this study, curing reactions triggered by exposure to different wavelengths of visible light are used to produce multimaterial objects with strong and well-defined interfaces. The improved mechanical strength of these interfaces is hypothesized to come from a continuous acrylate network that bridges domains. This wavelength-selective photocuring of interpenetrating polymer networks is a promising strategy for increasing the mechanical performance of 3D-printed objects.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of nanoscale size and ordering on the mechanical and degradation properties of amphiphilic hydrogels. By synthesizing ABA triblock copolymers with varying PEG and PPF block lengths, the properties of self-assembled hydrogels were examined and their correlation with mechanical properties was highlighted through various testing methods. Swelling and in vitro degradation tests demonstrated the influence of nanoscale ordering on the degradation timescale.

Lindsay L. Robinson et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of catalyst-free, 3D-printing resins using boronate esters, which allow room-temperature exchange at cross-linking sites and modulate the dynamic character of 3D-printed objects for postprinting functionalization. The combination of dynamic and static resins enables a balance between structural stability and rapid exchange in printed parts, with the ability to modulate cross-linking density postprinting.

Light-Triggered Click Chemistry

Gangam Srikanth Kumar et al.

Summary: The merger of click chemistry with discrete photochemical processes has given rise to a new class of reactions known as photoclick chemistry, allowing for rapid and precise synthesis of organic structures under mild conditions. Photoclick chemistry provides unparalleled control over reactive intermediate generation, making it indispensable in spatially addressable applications such as biomolecular labeling and polymer conjugation. Particularly popular are photoclick reactions based on 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions and Diels-Alder reactions due to their excellent reaction kinetics, selectivity, and biocompatibility.

Three-dimensionally printable shear-thinning triblock copolypeptide hydrogels with antimicrobial potency

Robert Murphy et al.

Summary: By rational design, block sequence controlled triblock copolypeptides with cysteine and tyrosine, as well as a lysine or glutamic acid center block, were developed. These copolypeptides contribute specific properties to hydrogels, making them extrusion printable and antimicrobial. Complex hydrogel structures with high shape retention were demonstrated through 3D printing, along with composition-dependent potent antimicrobial activity in contact-killing assays.
