CFD study of hydrogen injection through tuyeres into ironmaking blast furnaces

Yuting Zhuo et al.

Summary: In this study, a 3D transient CFD model was used to describe the complex multiphase flow and thermochemical behaviors related to hydrogen combustion in blast furnaces. The effects of hydrogen injection rate on raceway evolution were studied through comparison between hydrogen injection (HI) and pulverised coal injection (PCI). The results indicate that HI operation leads to larger raceway volume and more reducing gas production compared to PCI.

Modeling of hydrogen shaft injection in ironmaking blast furnaces

Xiaobing Yu et al.

Summary: The study using a multi-fluid BF model investigates the impact of hydrogen shaft injection on BF performance, revealing significant effects on gas flow field, thermal field, and reduction behaviors. With increasing injection rate, hydrogen penetration depth increases, apex of cohesive zone shifts upwards with more concave profile, and both reduction degree of iron oxides and thermal conditions in the shaft improve, leading to a significantly decreased fossil fuel rate.

CFD-DEM modelling of the migration of fines in suspension flow through a solid packed bed

Zhouzun Xie et al.

Summary: In this work, a smoothed volume distribution model (SVDM) was developed to simulate the migration of fines in suspension flow through a solid packed bed based on the unresolved CFD-DEM framework. The SVDM method allows a high-resolution mesh and can achieve a high efficiency and applicability compared to the DPVM method. The effects of inlet fine concentration and solid/fine size ratio on fines migration behavior were also studied, revealing insights into fine powder holdup and migration mechanisms.

Numerical study of fine particles behaviors in a packed bed with lateral injection using CFD-DEM

Heng Zhou et al.

Summary: The numerical study of gas-fine flow in a packed bed with lateral injection provides insights into the distribution and clogging behaviors of fine particles. Various variables such as diameter ratio, mass flux of fine particles, and rolling frictional coefficient impact the behavior of fine particles in the packed bed. The results indicate that changes in these variables lead to differences in the clustering and dispersion of fine particles in the packed bed.

Isothermal Carbothermal Reduction of FeTiO3 Doped with MgO

Xiangdong Xing et al.

Summary: The study found that MgO can promote the reduction of FeTiO3, forming a new phase in the crystal structure. With increasing MgO content, the stability of the FeTiO3 lattice decreases while reaction activity increases, aiding in the formation of new compounds. However, excessive MgO content weakens its promoting effect on the reduction of FeTiO3.

Particle-scale modelling of raceway dynamics in a blast furnace using a smoothing method

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a smoothing method to effectively simulate the lateral high-speed gas injection into a packed bed, forming a raceway cavity under high Reynolds number gas flow and narrow orifice conditions. The method successfully captures a plume-like raceway and proposes the boundary and volume of the cavity as two criteria for quantitatively assessing the raceway profile.

A data-based soft-sensor approach to estimating raceway depth in ironmaking blast furnaces

Wangyan Li et al.

Summary: A soft sensor approach is proposed to estimate the raceway depth in ironmaking blast furnace from thermal images. The method includes generating representative thermal images through a raceway CFD model, using PCA to extract key features, and developing a model-learning tool (SVM) to learn the underlying relationship between thermal images and raceway depth. The soft-sensor model shows promising results for real-time estimation of raceway depth.
