Communicative And Affective Components in Processing Auditory Vitality Forms: An fMRI Study

Summary: In previous studies, it was found that auditory vitality forms, especially when action verbs are pronounced gently or rudely, activate the dorso-central insula. To investigate whether this activation is specific to the conjunction of action verbs and auditory vitality forms or if auditory vitality forms alone can activate the insula, different types of words were presented. The results showed that words unrelated to actions, as well as interjections conveying communicative intention, pronounced with different auditory vitality forms, were able to activate the dorsal-central insula.

Summary: Communication among people can be done through speech, gestures, and sometimes touch, with handshake being an example of tactile communication. The customs surrounding handshakes vary in different cultures, with Western societies often using handshakes for meetings, farewells, congratulations, or successful business interactions. The neural mechanisms underlying the affective components conveyed by handshake, as well as the involvement of different brain regions in processing tactile vitality forms and facial expressions during handshakes, are still not completely understood.
