Ripe for reassessment: A synthesis of available molecular data for the speciose diatom family Bacillariaceae

David G. Mann et al.

Summary: This study analyzed multiple gene sequences to examine the Bacillariaceae family, confirming that Nitzschia is not monophyletic. While the classification of Nitzschia has its shortcomings, certain features like the structure of the raphe canal and girdle appear to be evolutionarily conservative.

clinker & clustermap.js: automatic generation of gene cluster comparison figures

Cameron L. M. Gilchrist et al.

Summary: Genes involved in biological pathways are often found in gene clusters, and comparing these clusters can provide valuable insights into their function and evolutionary history. To simplify the tedious process of comparing and visualizing gene cluster similarity, a Python tool called clinker and a companion JavaScript library called clustermap.js have been developed to automatically generate accurate, interactive, publication-quality gene cluster comparison figures from sequence files.

A new P450 involved in the furanocoumarin pathway underlies a recent case of convergent evolution

Cloe Villard et al.

Summary: Furanocoumarins are phytoalexins used as an example of the arms race between plants and herbivorous insects, synthesized through a similar pathway in different plant lineages. In the fig tree, a new cytochrome P450, CYP76F112, was identified as catalyzing a unique reaction, suggesting recent emergence within the Moraceae family through lineage-specific expansion and diversification. This discovery opens new possibilities for utilizing the furanocoumarin pathway and highlights the potential of cytochromes P450 to evolve new functions for plant adaptation.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.

Preparation of domoic acid analogues using a bioconversion system, and their toxicity in mice

Yukari Maeno et al.

Summary: Researchers developed a bioconversion system to obtain DA analogues from linear substrates using DabC expressed in Escherichia coli. Three IA analogues with various substitutions were prepared, and their toxicity in mice was examined by intracerebroventricular injection. Results suggest that the 7 '-carbonyl group in the side chain of IA is crucial for its toxicity, supported by docking studies of DA, IA, and the analogues to GluK1.
