Susceptibility of an Airborne Common Cold Virus to Relative Humidity

Sadegh Niazi et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the survival of human respiratory viruses in the air is influenced by ambient relative humidity, and successfully predicted this dependence using the EDDI model. The survival rate of the virus in the air was found to be higher in specific ranges of relative humidity, and lower in others.

Mechanistic theory predicts the effects of temperature and humidity on inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 and other enveloped viruses

Dylan H. Morris et al.

Summary: In this study, the stability of SARS-CoV-2 on inert surfaces under different temperature and humidity conditions was measured, and a mechanistic model was developed to explain and predict how temperature and humidity affect virus inactivation. The results showed that the virus survives longest at low temperatures and extreme humidity, with implications for understanding virus transmission mechanisms and strategies to mitigate transmission risk. The mechanistic model accurately predicted measurements of five different human coronaviruses, suggesting shared mechanisms may affect stability across various viruses.

Humidity-Dependent Survival of an Airborne Influenza A Virus: Practical Implications for Controlling Airborne Viruses

Sadegh Niazi et al.

Summary: Relative humidity (RH) can affect the survival of influenza A virus (IAV), and the survival can be predicted by the efflorescence/deliquescence divergent infectivity (EDDI) hypothesis. The study found different survival rates of IAV in effloresced and non-effloresced aerosols, with implications for controlling indoor air infection. The sudden change in RH from saturated to specific ranges also impacted the virus survival differently, supporting the EDDI model for predicting IAV survival under seasonal conditions.

Hygroscopic growth of simulated lung fluid aerosol particles under ambient environmental conditions

Summary: The hygroscopicity of respiratory aerosol plays a crucial role in determining their particle size distribution and solute concentrations affecting microorganisms. The study observed phase hysteresis with increasing and decreasing relative humidity, indicating clear water uptake prior to deliquescence. These findings suggest that the history of relative humidity may influence the state of respiratory aerosol and impact microbial viability.
