Analysis of the impact of vehicle lightweighting on recycling benefits considering life cycle energy reductions

Fernando Enzo Kenta Sato et al.

Summary: The study evaluates reductions in energy consumption from vehicle lightweighting, taking into consideration the effects of end of life vehicle recycling. Material composition changes of the body in white are assessed throughout the vehicle's life, with a focus on production phase embodied energy values, use phase mass induced energy consumption, and end of life vehicle recycling options. Comparisons of alternative materials like aluminum, AHSS, and CFRP are made in the Japanese vehicle market, with user cost comparisons as an additional assessment variable. The research shows that jointly analyzing material lightweighting with possible recycling destinations can significantly increase energy reduction benefits, while incorrect combinations could lead to counterproductive energy consumption increments.
