CFD-DEM study of particle-fluid flow and retention performance of sand screen

Noor Ilyana Ismail et al.

Summary: Sand screens are widely used to control sand production in unconsolidated reservoirs, with optimizing screen size still a challenge. This paper presents a numerical study of sand retention and production behaviors for wire-wrapped screens, showing that the increase in size ratio and the presence of fluid flow enhance sand production and cause unstable sand retention. Wetting fluids play an essential role in sand production and bridging mechanisms over the slot.

Numerical Simulation of the Pilot-Scale High-Density Circulating Fluidized Bed Riser

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a simulation model for high-density circulating fluidized beds (HDCFB) and empirically modifies existing solid pressure correlation to consider different clustering behaviors. The effects of gas velocity and solid circulation rate on cluster formation and gas-solid flow are studied, revealing differences between low-density CFBs and HDCFBs.

CFD-DEM analysis of hydraulic conveying bends: Interaction between pipe orientation and flow regime

Mengmeng Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical study of hydraulic bends in a conveying pipeline system, focusing on the interaction between pipe orientation and flow regime. The results show significant differences in pressure drop and erosion rate for different pipe orientations and conveying speeds. Among the three simulated pipe orientations, the inclined bend performs the best under various flow regimes, with minimal impact from pressure drop, pressure fluctuation, and erosion rate.

One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network with Adaptive Moment Estimation for Modelling of the Sand Retention Test

Nurul Nadhirah Abd Razak et al.

Summary: Stand-alone screens (SASs) are an active sand control method used to filter sand produced from oil and gas wells. Sand retention tests (SRTs) are typically conducted in the laboratory using computer simulations, but the experimental setups and analysis are not standardized, making it time-consuming and expensive. The application of deep learning, specifically one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1D-CNN), has shown promising results in reducing time, cost, and effort in predicting sand retention in SRT. The proposed 1D-CNN model outperforms other machine learning models in predicting sand production and plugging sign accuracy for SRT tests.

CFD-DEM Simulation of Sand-Retention Mechanisms in Slurry Flow

Fatemeh Razavi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates sand retention mechanisms in sand filters at the opening, exploring various mechanisms under different conditions using a CFD-DEM model. The model is validated and three retention mechanisms are observed through simulations. The importance of gravity and interaction forces at the microscale in relation to other forces involved in retention mechanisms is confirmed.

Turbulent coarse-particle non-Newtonian suspension flow in a pipe

Enzu Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the interaction between non-Newtonian carrier and coarse particles in high concentration tailings suspension, presenting a DNS-DEM model validated with experiments. Results show that the presence of concentrated particles weakens turbulence in the pipeline, affecting particle resuspension.
