Strategies to Improve Poultry Food Safety, a Landscape Review

Steven C. Ricke

Summary: Food safety is a significant public health issue in the poultry industry, with Salmonella and Campylobacter being the primary foodborne pathogens. Strategies to reduce these pathogens in poultry production include prevention and elimination, with a focus on identifying sources and routes of transmission.

Temporal Dynamics of Cloacal Microbiota in Adult Laying Chickens With and Without Access to an Outdoor Range

Janneke Schreuder et al.

Summary: Recent studies have established connections between animal health and performance, and the host's microbiota. The microbial responses in poultry to changes in housing conditions and the host's environment are still not well understood. This study found that the microbiota composition of adult poultry flocks remains stable following sudden environmental changes, with unique fluctuations over time observed in each flock. The access to an outdoor range had no detectable effect on microbial community composition, but differences were found in the richness and variability of the microbiota among chickens in the same flock.

Summary: The study characterized the chicken transcriptome of various cell and tissue types, revealing differentially expressed genes involved in cellular processes like differentiation, metabolism, and immune functions. These findings provide valuable insights into the understanding of the chicken genome.
