An experimental study on low velocity impact performance of bolted composite joints-part 2: Influence of long-term seawater aging

Halil Burak Kaybal et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the low-velocity impact response of bolted fiber-reinforced polymer joints in two scenarios, and evaluates the impact of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) reinforcement of the epoxy matrix. The effects of seawater aging on the impact performance of the joints are also studied, with results showing a decrease in impact resistance after aging, but an improvement when using HNTs reinforced joints. The ToB impact scenario is considered more detrimental than the SoW tests, and a novel damage mechanism is introduced to address the impact of seawater aging.

Percolation and Reynolds Flow in Elastic Contacts of Isotropic and Anisotropic, Randomly Rough Surfaces

Anle Wang et al.

Summary: In this work, the elastic contact between isotropic and anisotropic, rigid, randomly rough surfaces and linearly elastic counterfaces, as well as the subsequent Reynolds flow through the gap between them, is numerically studied. The percolation threshold is found to be dependent on fluid flow direction in anisotropic systems, and a critical contact area near 0.415 is confirmed. Effective-medium treatments provide accurate expressions for Reynolds fluid flow conductances.

An experimental study on low velocity impact performance of bolted composite joints part 1: Influence of halloysite nanotubes on dynamic loading response

Halil Burak Kaybal et al.

Summary: The goal of this study is to investigate the dynamic loading response of bolted basalt-epoxy composite laminates under different impact energies, and evaluate the effects of HNTs reinforcement on the impact response and damage propagation. The results show that ToB damage is relatively severe, HNTs can improve impact resistance by about 15%, especially at lower impact energies.

Significantly improved shear, dynamic-mechanical, and mode II fracture performance of seawater aged basalt/epoxy composites: The impact of halloysite nanotube reinforcement

Hasan Ulus et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that introducing halloysite nanotubes into the polymer matrix offers an efficient barrier effect and improved fiber-matrix interface in seawater environment, crucial for enhancing the mechanical performance of composites. Experimental results indicated that HNTs reinforced multi-scale composites exhibited higher shear strength and mode II delamination toughness after aging in sea-water, showing potential for future engineering applications.

Seawater Aged Basalt/Epoxy Composites: Improved Bearing Performance with Halloysite Nanotube Reinforcement

Halil Burak Kaybal et al.

Summary: The research focused on the impact of seawater aging and halloysite nanotube (HNT) nano reinforcements on the bearing performance of basalt-epoxy composites. It was found that HNT nano reinforcements significantly improved the bearing strength by 18%, while seawater aging caused a nearly 45% reduction in bearing strength. The addition of HNTs and seawater aging also affected bearing fracture modes, with the resultant fracture surfaces revealing degradation mechanisms related to these factors. These results provide insights for designing bolted fiber reinforced polymer composites exposed to corrosive environments.

Effect of repeated hydrothermal cycling on the durability of glass fiber/epoxy composites with and without carbon nanotube reinforcement

Abhinav Omprakash Fulmali et al.

Summary: This study explores the enhancement of polymeric composites by incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNT) and investigates the performance of glass fiber reinforced epoxy (GE) composite with and without CNT under repeated hydrothermal cycling. The research confirms that the addition of 0.1 wt% of CNTs resulted in increased flexural strength and modulus compared to neat GE composite. Furthermore, the study reveals that the mechanical performance of the CNT embedded GE composite degrades faster than the neat one with the increasing number of hydrothermal cycles, with explanations provided based on analysis from various techniques.
