Scalable Synthesis of Crystalline One-Dimensional Carbon Nanothreads through Modest-Pressure Polymerization of Furan

Steven Huss et al.

Summary: Carbon nanothreads, one-dimensional sp(3)-rich polymers, combine high tensile strength with flexibility due to their subnanometer widths and diamond-like cores. This study reports scalable synthesis of carbon nanothreads based on molecular furan, achievable at an onset reaction pressure of only 10 GPa due to reduced aromaticity. In-situ observations and various analyses support the formation of well-ordered crystalline material from liquid furan, providing evidence for the polymerization process and potential for large molecular weights.

A Fully Coplanar Donor-Acceptor Polymeric Semiconductor with Promoted Charge Separation Kinetics for Photochemistry

Zhi-An Lan et al.

Summary: By studying the impact of different linking patterns on charge generation and separation in polymeric photocatalysts, it was found that the double-stranded linking pattern enhances donor-acceptor interactions, generates a coplanar structure, facilitates charge generation and separation, and enables red-shifted light absorption.

Perfect and Defective 13C-Furan-Derived Nanothreads from ModestPressure Synthesis Analyzed by 13C NMR

Bryan S. Matsuura et al.

Summary: The atomic-level structure of nanothreads produced by the slow compression of C-13(4)-furan was studied using advanced solid-state NMR. The majority of carbon atoms were found to be bonded to hydrogen, with a small percentage in different functional groups. The nanothreads exhibited both asymmetric and symmetric ring structures, with a portion of the carbon atoms forming highly ordered, fully saturated segments.

Synthesis of double core chromophore-functionalized nanothreads by compressing azobenzene in a diamond anvil cell

Sebastiano Romi et al.

Summary: Carbon nanothreads are new materials produced under high pressure conditions, synthesized by compressing crystals of small aromatic molecules and utilizing anisotropic stress. The presence of heteroatoms or unsaturation improves processability and tunes electronic properties, while controlled insertion of chromophores can tailor the optical and electronic properties of these mechanically extraordinary materials. The synthesis of double core nanothreads linked by azo groups is a fundamental step towards achieving nanothreads with tailored photochemical and photophysical properties.
