This study successfully prepared cerium/silver substituted hydroxyapatite (Ce/Ag-HAP) and incorporated it into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/carboxy methylcellulose (CMC) composite. The composites showed enhanced mechanical strength and antibacterial activity.
In this study, cerium/silver substituted hydroxyapatite (Ce/Ag-HAP) was prepared by sol-gel method and different wt% (20, 40 and 60 wt%) of Ce/Ag-HAP was added to prepare the composite (Ce/Ag-HAP)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/carboxy methylcellulose (CMC) by electrospinning method. Mechanical strength, antimicrobial activity, in vitro hemocompatibility, biomineralization, porosity and swelling tests were studied after the authentication of the prepared composites. The phase formations of the prepared composites were authenticated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). The functional group was analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Surface morphology and elemental composition were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). Enhanced mechanical property (64.15 MPa) and antibacterial activity (46 +/- 1.27, 50 +/- 1.12, 47 +/- 1.31 against S. aureus, E. coli and C. albicans were detected for 40 wt% of Ce/Ag-HAP added PVA/CMC composite compared to other composites.
