Towards Machine Recognition of Facial Expressions of Pain in Horses

Summary: Facial activity can convey valid information about pain in horses, but accurate scoring is challenging. Two general approaches to automatic horse pain recognition have been suggested: objectively defined facial expression aspects and flexible machine learning with raw videos. Both approaches show promising results.
