Farmers' perceptions of climate change and adaptation strategies in South Africa's Western Cape

Katharina Talanow et al.

Summary: The study reveals that most farmers in a water-scarce, drought-stricken agricultural region of South Africa's Western Cape have observed long-term regional changes in climate, such as changes in rainfall patterns, increasing temperatures, and extreme climatic events. Farmers' adaptive behavior is influenced by past experience of climatic stresses and internal factors, including risk perception, perceived adaptive capacity, and cognitive biases. Farmers have implemented adaptive strategies on their farms, including alterations to soil and crop management, changes of harvest and planting time, crop rotations, and water conservation techniques.

The Changing Nature of Hazard and Disaster Risk in the Anthropocene

Susan L. Cutter

Summary: This article examines the changing nature of hazard and disaster risk through three thematic areas: redefining extremes, examining the complexity in hazard and disaster risk, and exploring social inequalities. The concepts of the Anthropocene provide a reflexive rubric for understanding how society responds and adapts to changes in life support systems due to human alteration of natural systems.
