On the linkage between urban heat island and urban pollution island: Three-decade literature review towards a conceptual framework

Giulia Ulpiani

Summary: This paper conducts a systematic review of the existing knowledge on the link between urban heat island (UHI) and urban pollution island (UPI) since 1990, analyzing results from 16 countries and 11 climatic zones. By examining methodological and experimental trends, geographical dependencies, and research gaps, the paper outlines opportunities and challenges towards disentangling and mitigating these phenomena. Detailed content analysis according to five prominent topics provides a blueprint for coping strategies and precautions in urban design.

Impacts of green roofs on water, temperature, and air quality: A bibliometric review

Hongqing Liu et al.

Summary: Research has shown that green roofs play a significant role in urban environments, providing positive impacts such as reducing stormwater management pressures, mitigating the urban heat island effect, decreasing energy consumption, and improving air quality. However, there is currently a lack of standard assessment methods and tools, as well as a need for balance and coordination between different service values.

Localized synergies between heat waves and urban heat islands: Implications on human thermal comfort and urban heat management

Bao-Jie He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synergy between heat waves and urban heat islands, revealing that less urbanized areas are more sensitive to the impacts. Air moisture and wind play a beneficial role in alleviating heat exacerbation, but the extent varies depending on geographic conditions, temperature types, and heat wave/normal conditions.

Variation of rooftop thermal environment with roof typology: a field experiment in Kitakyushu, Japan

Gaochuan Zhang et al.

Summary: A field experiment in a temperate city of Japan compared the thermal environment of green roof, wooden roof, and shaded roof, showing that green roof performed best in reducing air temperature and heat stress, wooden roof had the worst heat stress, and shaded roof was better but not as effective as green roof. Installing shading devices is crucial for improving rooftop thermal environment and alleviating heat stress.

Towards green roof implementation: Drivers, motivations, barriers and recommendations

Gaochuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of 186 published papers from 2000 to 2019 to identify the drivers, motivations, and barriers to green roof implementation (GRI). The results show that drivers to GRI include policy and market pressures, as well as innovation and technology advancement. Motivations for GRI range from energy efficiency to biodiversity increase, while barriers include a lack of government policy and individual unwillingness. Strategic recommendations are proposed to strengthen drivers, foster motivations, and overcome barriers to GRI.

Influence of urban morphological characteristics on thermal environment

Jun Yang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that in Dalian city, LST shows a strong spatial positive correlation, with buildings mainly being multi-story and high-rise buildings distributed in medium-density areas. LST exhibited the highest positive correlation with FAR and was negatively correlated with SVF, indicating a significant influence of urban morphology on the thermal environment.
