An investigation into the effectiveness of various professionals and behavior modification programs, with or without medication, for the treatment of canine aggression

Ian R. Dinwoodie et al.

Summary: In this study, a subset of 963 dogs with aggressive behavior were investigated to understand the types of professionals sought for assistance and the resolutions employed. Most owners sought help from professionals and utilized behavior modification and training techniques for treatment. Specific behavior modification techniques were found to be beneficial for addressing aggressive behavior in dogs.

Mortality Resulting from Undesirable Behaviours in Dogs Aged Three Years and under Attending Primary-Care Veterinary Practices in Australia

Yan Yu et al.

Summary: There is increasing evidence that undesirable behaviors in dogs can compromise the welfare of both canine companions and their owners. A recent study in the UK showed that undesirable behaviors were the predominant cause of mortality in young dogs. A companion study in Australia from 2013 to 2018 reported a comparable proportion of mortality due to undesirable behaviors, with aggression being the most commonly reported one. Neutered dogs and purebred dogs are at higher risk of death due to undesirable behaviors, and the attending veterinarian may intervene with behaviorist referral or pharmacological therapy.

Characterizing unsuccessful animal adoptions: age and breed predict the likelihood of return, reasons for return and post-return outcomes

Lauren Powell et al.

Summary: This study identified key reasons and predictors for post-adoption returns of animals in shelters. Behavioral issues and incompatibility with existing pets were common reasons for returns, with adult dogs having the highest likelihood of being returned post-adoption. Breed and age were significant predictors of return likelihood and outcomes, with Pit bull-type breeds being more likely to be returned multiple times and euthanized post-return. The findings underscore the importance of considering animal behavior in adoption processes to reduce the likelihood of returns and improve post-adoption outcomes.

Frequency and animal demographics of mouthing behavior in companion dogs in the United States

Mindy R. Waite et al.

Summary: Problem behavior, such as mouthing in companion dogs, can negatively impact both the animal's quality of life and the stress level of human owners. Despite the prevalence of mouthing behavior, there is a lack of data on its frequency and predictors. Age plays a significant role in the prevalence of mouthing behavior, with many dogs continuing this behavior into adulthood, while frequency and severity tend to decrease as the dog ages.
