Wakefield decay in a radially bounded plasma due to formation of electron halo

R. Spitsyn et al.

Summary: In a radially bounded plasma, a new effect has been discovered that can limit the lifetime of weakly non-linear wakefields. When the drive beam is narrow, some plasma electrons form a negatively charged halo around the plasma and interact with the plasma wave under the charge separation field, causing its damping. The lowest-energy halo electrons extract energy from the wave more efficiently due to their trajectories being bent by the plasma wave towards regions of strongest acceleration.
