Important pest species of the Spodoptera complex: Biology, thermal requirements and ecological zoning

Jose Roberto Postali Parra et al.

Summary: This study tested the effect of various temperatures on four species of the Spodoptera complex, finding that Spodoptera eridania prefers moderate temperatures while Spodoptera albula may thrive in warmer regions. Spodoptera frugiperda and S. cosmioides showed a wider temperature range for development, with S. frugiperda displaying higher biological potential across all evaluated temperatures. The data produced can assist in predicting outbreaks of these pests and understanding their spatial distribution.

Identification and characterization of the LRR repeats in plant LRR-RLKs

Tianshu Chen

Summary: The Phyto-LRR prediction program effectively predicts LRR segments in plant LRR-RLKs and has been trained using plant-specific LRR-HCS segments from 17 represented land plant species. Through the database constructed based on this program, comprehensive sequential characteristics of plant LRR-RLK ectodomains were profiled and analyzed, providing insights into the functions of these receptor-like kinases.

Differential levels of fatty acid-amino acid conjugates in the oral secretions of lepidopteran larvae account for the differed profiles of volatiles produced by maize

Xiaoyu Ling et al.

Summary: This study investigated the elicitors in insect oral secretions from seven lepidopteran insects with varying associations with maize plants. New pests were found to have higher total contents of FACs in their oral secretions, leading to increased maize emissions. Variations in FACs may be due to differences in internal FAC degradation and fatty acid excretion.

Receptor kinases in plant responses to herbivory

Philippe Reymond

Summary: Plants have the ability to detect and respond to biotic stresses through pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) which specifically recognize molecules from enemies and activate immune responses. Research on PRRs related to herbivory signals is still in its early stages, with potential PRRs identified but lacking direct binding evidence to ligands, indicating many uncharacterized ligand-receptor pairs.

De novo assembly, annotation, and comparative analysis of 26 diverse maize genomes

Matthew B. Hufford et al.

Summary: The study reports de novo genome assemblies, transcriptomes, annotations, and methylomes for 26 maize inbreds, with over 103,000 pangenes identified. It shows that the ancient tetraploid character of maize continues to degrade by fractionation, and reveals variation in DNA methylation levels across genotypes.

The transcriptional landscape of Arabidopsis thaliana pattern-triggered immunity

Marta Bjornson et al.

Summary: Plants adjust their metabolism based on environmental conditions, recognizing self and non-self molecules through pattern recognition receptors. Research suggests that plants exhibit a similar immune response to patterns of different biological origins or biochemical natures, indicating a general stress response. This initial danger response plays a crucial role in plant immunity and highlights the importance of early immune transcriptional reprogramming.
