Soil extracellular enzyme activities and the abundance of nitrogen-cycling functional genes responded more to N addition than P addition in an Inner Mongolian meadow steppe

Hong Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus addition on soil microbial functions and nutrient cycling in a meadow steppe, revealing that nitrogen addition alleviates microbial demand for nitrogen but increases microbial carbon limitation and soil nitrogen loss potential. Phosphorus addition, on the other hand, suppresses the abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria and soil nitrogen loss potential. The abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria and denitrifier genes in soils showed different responses to treatments and seasons.

A holistic framework integrating plant-microbe-mineral regulation of soil bioavailable nitrogen

Amanda B. Daly et al.

Summary: This study proposes a framework that unifies modern understanding of the cycling of bioavailable N, including ON depolymerization and solubilization, N sorption and desorption, and microbial ON turnover. By considering the balance between these processes, insight can be gained into the sources and transformation mechanisms of bioavailable N.
