Cardiometabolic Syndrome: An Update on Available Mouse Models

Dimitra Aravani et al.

Summary: Cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS) is a global epidemic characterized by abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, with approximately 25% prevalence in adults globally. Various mouse models, induced through genetic manipulation or specific diets and drugs, have contributed significantly to the understanding of CMS pathophysiology and the development of therapies. Researchers should carefully select and validate the most appropriate model, considering the differences between animal strains and the relevance to human physiology.

Summary: The findings of this study challenge previous reports and manufacturer claims of hyperbilirubinemia following silymarin treatment and are critical to guiding researchers toward an effective means to mildly elevate bilirubin, which evidence suggests could protect from cardiovascular disease.
