LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES DOMAIN 25 functions as a key regulator of haustorium development in dodders

Min-Yao Jhu et al.

Summary: The study found that down-regulating the CcLBD25 gene may affect the initiation and development of dodder parasitism, leading to stress on parasitic plants growing on hosts. Furthermore, reducing the expression of the CcLBD25 gene through host-induced gene silencing may aid in developing parasite-resistant crops.

Host-produced ethylene is required for marked cell expansion and endoreduplication in dodder search hyphae

Hideki Narukawa et al.

Summary: The genus Cuscuta includes stem holoparasitic plant species that obtain water, nutrients, proteins, and mRNA from their host plants via a parasitic organ called the haustorium. When the haustorium penetrates into the host tissue, search hyphae elongate within the host tissue, and invade the host's vascular system. In the case of Cuscuta campestris invading Arabidopsis, ethylene biosynthesis by the host plant promoted elongation of the parasite's search hyphae, with host-produced ethylene recognized as a stimulatory signal for successful invasion.
