Structural changes in aluminosilicate glasses up to 164 GPa and the role of alkali, alkaline earth cations and alumina in the densification mechanism

Marija Krstulovic et al.

Summary: This study investigates the densification mechanism in multicomponent aluminosilicate glasses under high pressure, revealing a higher structural flexibility of these glasses compared to pure systems. The presence of low field-strength alkali and alkaline earth cations in deep Earth's melts significantly influences the densification mechanism of glasses. Results suggest that velocity anomalies at the Earth's core-mantle boundary are unlikely to be explained by non-buoyant melts formed through structural transformations, but likely by melts with considerable differences in chemical composition compared to surrounding crystalline phases.

Stability and equation of state of face-centered cubic and hexagonal close packed phases of argon under pressure

Agnes Dewaele et al.

Summary: Experimental research reveals that argon partially transforms into a hexagonal close-packed structure under certain pressures, with the formation of stacking faults during the transformation process. Under the influence of non-hydrostatic pressure, some measured P-V points show deviation at moderate pressures.

Noble gas incorporation into silicate glasses: implications for planetary volatile storage

H. Yang et al.

Summary: High pressure, room temperature sound velocity measurements indicate that neon can enter the structure of silicate glasses and enhance their elastic strengths, while an ethanol-methanol mixture does not have the same effect. The incorporation of small molecules into silica and basalt glasses is influenced by the void size distribution of the glass and the size of the molecules. Pressure plays a key role in reducing the size of noble gases, thus increasing their solubilities in silicate melts and glasses.
