Design, validation, and benchmark tests of the aeroacoustic wind tunnel in SUSTech

Yannian Yang et al.

Summary: The aeroacoustic wind tunnel at SUSTech is a new facility for studies on sound generation mechanisms, noise reduction methods, and aerodynamic designs, with high-quality flow field and low background noise levels. The design methodology for wind-tunnel major components is detailed, and validation tests of flow quality and aeroacoustic performance are conducted. A benchmark test of airfoil tonal noise is performed using microphone and Particle Image Velocimetry measurements, showing consistent features with existing experimental observations.

An investigation of wake flows produced by asymmetrically structured porous coated cylinders

Elias J. G. Arcondoulis et al.

Summary: The experimental study of cylinders with asymmetric structured porous coatings showed widened and deeper wakes, reduced turbulent energy levels in the separated shear layer, and two tones in the velocity and acoustic power spectral densities. The higher frequency tone was found to be generated by localized flow behaviors in the separated shear layer, inversely related to the windward surface porosity of the coating. Applying a more densely spaced porous region on the windward side of the cylinder resulted in higher frequency broadband contributions independent of velocity fluctuations in the wake region. Time-averaged velocity profiles in the wake indicated a strong influence of leeward side porosity on drag coefficient, and linear stability analysis revealed absolute instabilities in the near wake of the coated cylinders.

Fluid-structure-sound interaction in noise reduction of a circular cylinder with flexible splitter plate

Fan Duan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of fluid-structure-sound interaction on flow-induced noise reduction by attaching splitter plates to the rear of a circular cylinder. The experiment shows that flexible splitter plates can effectively reduce Aeolian tone under certain parameters, with their movement pattern having significant effects on secondary and high-frequency noise.

Sound source and pseudo-sound in the near field of a circular cylinder in subsonic conditions

Shuai Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the radiating acoustic component dominates over the non-radiating hydrodynamic component above and upstream of the cylinder; in the oscillating near-wake region, the hydrodynamic component dominates over the acoustic component at most frequencies, except at the vortex shedding frequency where they are comparable; away from the oscillating near-wake region, the hydrodynamic pressure fluctuations decrease dramatically while the acoustic pressure fluctuations decay slowly, indicating that the acoustic component is the only one to propagate to the far field.
