Converged ab initio calculations of heavy nuclei

T. Miyagi et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new storage scheme for three-nucleon interaction matrix elements used in ab initio calculations of atomic nuclei. The scheme significantly reduces the required memory and allows for the generation of interaction matrix elements with improved convergence. The study also explores the impact of truncation and approximation on the ground-state energy.

Ab Initio Limits of Atomic Nuclei

S. R. Stroberg et al.

Summary: This study predicts the limits of existence of atomic nuclei, the proton and neutron drip lines, by utilizing a chiral nucleon interaction and in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations for nearly 700 isotopes. Experimental data confirms that the predictions are consistent with the theoretical uncertainties where the drip lines are known. Predictions for neutron-rich isotopes are provided for testing at rare-isotope beam facilities.

Ab Initio Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay Matrix Elements for 48Ca, 76Ge, and 82Se

A. Belley et al.

Summary: In this study, basis-space converged neutrinoless beta beta-decay nuclear matrix elements for the lightest candidates Ca-48, Ge-76, and Se-82 were calculated using ab initio methods. It was found that the tensor component is non-negligible in Ge-76 and Se-82, leading to nuclear matrix elements that are overall 25%-45% smaller than those obtained from the phenomenological shell model. While further developments are needed for a more accurate determination of final matrix elements with uncertainties, this work paves the way for a first-principles calculation of neutrinoless beta beta decay in all relevant nuclei for large-scale searches.

Nuclear matrix elements from lattice QCD for electroweak and beyond-Standard-Model processes

Zohreh Davoudi et al.

Summary: In the past decade, numerical solutions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) using lattice QCD techniques have advanced to the point of connecting fundamental aspects of nuclear physics with the underlying degrees of freedom of the Standard Model. Lattice QCD calculations of nuclear matrix elements offer guidance for low energy nuclear reactions in astrophysics, dark matter direct detection experiments, and experimental searches for violations of the symmetries of the Standard Model.

In-medium similarity renormalization group with three-body operators

M. Heinz et al.

Summary: The IMSRG approach has been extended to include three-body operators in the IMSRG(3) approximation. Systematic benchmarking shows that IMSRG(3) improves over IMSRG(2) relative to exact results. Approximate IMSRG(3) truncations based on computational cost are able to reproduce much of the systematic improvement offered by the full IMSRG(3).

Natural orbitals for many-body expansion methods

J. Hoppe et al.

Summary: The many-body problem for medium-mass systems is commonly addressed using wave-function expansion methods, with perturbatively constructed natural orbitals showing significant improvement in many-body applications. A systematic benchmark of natural orbitals in nonperturbative many-body calculations using the in-medium similarity renormalization group approach has demonstrated the computational savings and extended reach of ab initio methods towards heavier masses and higher accuracy.
