An analytical toolkit for the S-matrix bootstrap

Miguel Correia et al.

Summary: In this paper, we revisit analytical methods for constraining the nonperturbative S-matrix of unitary, relativistic, gapped theories in spacetime dimensions of d >= 3. By assuming extended analyticity of the two-to-two scattering amplitude and using it together with elastic unitarity, we develop two natural expansions of the amplitude - the threshold (non-relativistic) expansion and the large spin expansion. These expansions are related by the Froissart-Gribov inversion formula and help constrain scattering at finite energy and spin in terms of low-energy parameters measured in experiments. Finally, we discuss how the modern numerical approach to the S-matrix bootstrap can be improved based on the results of our analysis.

Dual EFT bootstrap: QCD flux tubes

Joan Elias Miro et al.

Summary: The researchers developed a bootstrap approach to Effective Field Theories (EFTs) based on the concept of duality in optimization theory. By analyzing a set of EFTs for confining flux tubes, they obtained optimal bounds on the scattering amplitude of Goldstone excitations, leading to bounds on the Wilson coefficients of the EFT action. They also discussed the comparison between their approach and EFT positivity bounds.

Crossing Symmetric Dispersion Relations in Quantum Field Theories

Aninda Sinha et al.

Summary: This letter discusses a crossing symmetric dispersion relation for 2-2 scattering in quantum field theories, highlighting a geometric rotation in the complex z plane. The resulting three-channel crossing symmetric dispersion is obtained, along with derivations of known positivity conditions and new nonperturbative inequalities. The approach is used to locate the first massive string state and derive a generalized Froissart bound valid for all energies.

The R-matrix bootstrap for the 2d O(N) bosonic model with a boundary

Martin Kruczenski et al.

Summary: The S-matrix bootstrap is extended to a 1+1d theory with O(N) symmetry and a boundary, resulting in the R-matrix bootstrap focusing on reflection matrices. The space of allowed R-matrices is an infinite dimensional convex space, with certain cases leading to integrable theories represented at the boundary. Analytic R-matrices beyond physical cuts reduce the allowed space, revealing new vertices corresponding to integrable theories.

Gravitational effective field theory islands, low-spin dominance, and the four-graviton amplitude

Zvi Bern et al.

Summary: This study analyzes constraints on the leading contributions of higher-dimension operators to the four-graviton amplitude in four spacetime dimensions from perturbative unitarity and crossing. It focuses on the impact of the exchange by massive degrees of freedom on making the amplitudes infrared finite. The results suggest that the Wilson coefficients of weakly-coupled gravitational physical theories are more constrained than previously thought.

Crossing Symmetric Dispersion Relations for Mellin Amplitudes

Rajesh Gopakumar et al.

Summary: The study establishes a firm foundation for conformal field theories by utilizing manifestly crossing symmetric dispersion relations, resolving contact term ambiguities. The new approach employs locality constraints to replace the requirement of crossing symmetry in the usual fixed-t dispersion relation, showing that the sum rules based on two channel dispersion relations and the present dispersion relations are identical.

Where Is String Theory in the Space of Scattering Amplitudes?

Andrea Guerrieri et al.

Summary: The study employs S-matrix bootstrap to investigate graviton scattering amplitudes in ten dimensions, leading to the exclusion of a negative region, approval of a garden region, and the exclusion of an intermediate swamp region. Interestingly, string theory appears to cover almost all the garden region at weak coupling and the swamp boundary at strong coupling.

S-matrix bootstrap in 3+1 dimensions: regularization and dual convex problem

Yifei He et al.

Summary: The S-matrix bootstrap explores the space of S-matrices allowed by various constraints, finding interesting theories at the boundary and vertices of the space. Focusing on 3+1 dimensional theories, the dual convex minimization problem provides strict upper bounds and practical advantages over the primal problem. The variables in this approach are dual partial waves that are not bound by crossing, unitarity or other constraints, yet are directly related to the partial waves that do follow those constraints.

Sharp boundaries for the swampland

Simon Caron-Huot et al.

Summary: This article revisits the problem of bounding higher derivative couplings in consistent weakly coupled gravitational theories, using dispersive sum rules to limit the order one coefficients and overcoming the difficulties caused by the graviton pole. The approach justifies the expectation that higher derivative couplings are expected to be of order one in the units of the UV cutoff.

Andrea L. Guerrieri et al.

Summary: The article demonstrates the use of numerical S-matrix bootstrap method to derive bounds on the Wilson coefficients controlling the low-energy dynamics of massless pions. This approach provides a proof of concept for deriving non-perturbative bounds on massless EFTs in more than two spacetime dimensions.

Selection rules for the S-Matrix bootstrap

Anjishnu Bose et al.

Summary: In this study, the allowed space of S-matrices on the Adler zeros' plane is examined using a numerical S-matrix bootstrap program for pion scattering. The study focuses on two physical quantities, the averaged total scattering cross-section, and the averaged entanglement power. The emerging linearity in the leading Regge trajectory is found to be correlated with a reduction in these quantities, and two potentially viable regions with decent agreement with low energy scattering lengths are identified.

Positive moments for scattering amplitudes

Brando Bellazzini et al.

Summary: We have identified the complete set of conditions satisfied by the forward 2 -> 2 scattering amplitude in unitary and causal theories, which can be applied to effective field theories (EFTs). We have found optimal subsets of constraints suitable for bounding EFTs at any finite order in the energy expansion, and discussed conditions for the approximation to apply and the validity range in energy and couplings.

New positivity bounds from full crossing symmetry

Andrew J. Tolley et al.

Summary: Positivity bounds derived from partial wave expansion and full crossing symmetry can constrain effective field theories by putting upper and lower bounds on Wilson coefficients. These bounds are more constraining than linear positivity for scalars and can be used to exclude theories with soft amplitude behavior.

The EFT-hedron

Nima Arkani-Hamed et al.

Summary: The study reexamines the constraints imposed by causality and unitarity on the low-energy effective field theory expansion of four-particle scattering amplitudes, revealing a hidden totally positive structure similar to the positive geometries associated with grassmannians and amplituhedra, termed the EFT-hedron. By investigating the boundary structure of the EFT-hedron systematically, it provides linear and non-linear inequalities that must be satisfied by the EFT expansion in any theory. The EFT-hedron geometry and constraints are illustrated with various examples, including new consistency conditions on the scattering amplitudes of photons and gravitons in the real world.
