Highly anisotropic excitons and multiple phonon bound states in a van der Waals antiferromagnetic insulator

Summary: This study reports the observation of excitons coupled to zigzag antiferromagnetic order in the layered antiferromagnetic insulator NiPS3, with narrow photoluminescence linewidth and near-unity linear polarization. The suppression of photoluminescence with reduced sample thickness, consistent with the calculated bandgap of NiPS3, indicates the potential of NiPS3 as a 2D platform for exploring magneto-exciton physics with strong correlations.

Spin-induced linear polarization of photoluminescence in antiferromagnetic van der Waals crystals

Summary: This study successfully demonstrates the optical detection of Neel vector orientation in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS3, and reveals a strong correlation between photoluminescence polarization and spin orientation in the crystal. By applying an in-plane magnetic field, manipulation of the photoluminescence polarization is achieved.

Imaging the Neel vector switching in the monolayer antiferromagnet MnPSe3 with strain-controlled Ising order

Summary: Antiferromagnets are interesting materials for spintronics applications due to their fast dynamics and robustness against magnetic field perturbations. This study demonstrates that uniaxial strain can align the Neel vector in MnPSe3 down to the monolayer limit, showing evidence of long-range antiferromagnetic order and Ising-type Neel vector switching. The emergence of strain-controlled Ising order in the XY magnet MnPSe3 opens up new possibilities for compact antiferromagnetic spintronic devices in the two-dimensional limit.

Controlling the anisotropy of a van der Waals antiferromagnet with light

Summary: Van der Waals magnets provide a platform for exploring low-dimensional magnetism, and using ultrashort pulses of light, researchers have demonstrated control over magnetic anisotropy in the 2D van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS3. By tuning photon energy in resonance with an orbital transition, they selectively activate a subterahertz magnon mode displaying two-dimensional behavior. The results suggest promising possibilities for manipulating magnetic order in low-dimensional (anti)ferromagnets through orbital resonance excitation.
