Active liquid crystals powered by force-sensing DNA-motor clusters

Alexandra M. Tayar et al.

Summary: Active nematics powered by energy-consuming molecular motors exhibit nonequilibrium dynamics, with programmable clusters designed using kinesin motors linked by a double-stranded DNA linker. The efficiency of these clusters depends on motor stepping dynamics and linker chemical structure, with properties that enable force-sensing cluster design. When the load across the DNA linker exceeds a critical threshold, the clusters fall apart, revealing the average load experienced by the kinesin motors as they generate active stresses that power nonequilibrium dynamics at different scales.

Scaling Regimes of Active Turbulence with External Dissipation

Berta Martinez-Prat et al.

Summary: Experimental results of active nematic fluid show that kinetic energy spectrum follows theoretical predictions at small and intermediate scales, but is influenced by the 3D oil layer at larger scales, leading to the emergence of a new scaling regime. The study reveals that external dissipation plays a significant role in affecting the spectrum properties.
