Temporal switching to extend the bandwidth of thin absorbers

Huanan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of temporal switching to reduce signal reflections from thin films, extending quasi-normal mode theory to time switching and developing a new modeling approach for a broad class of time-switched structures. The formalism provides optimal switching strategies to maximize bandwidth with minimal reflection, showing promising prospects for time-switched nanophotonic and metamaterial systems to overcome the limits of traditional passive structures.

Temporal multilayer structures for designing higher-order transfer functions using time-varying metamaterials

D. Ramaccia et al.

Summary: Temporal metamaterials are artificial materials with electromagnetic properties that change over time, allowing for the realization of non-homogeneous temporal media or stepwise transitions. By modeling wave propagation through a generalized temporal multilayer structure, higher-order transfer functions can be synthesized, enabling the design of novel electromagnetic and optical devices with tailored scattering responses. This approach leverages the temporal dimension instead of the spatial dimension typically used in optical and electromagnetic multilayered structures.

Capturing Broadband Light in a Compact Bound State in the Continuum

Zeki Hayran et al.

Summary: The study shows that subwavelength open resonators undergoing suitable temporal modulation can efficiently capture broadband incident waves into nonradiating structural eigenmodes, representing the first example of a BiC accessible to broadband light. These time-varying BiCs have the potential to overcome some bandwidth limitations of achromatic dispersion-engineered metalenses, highlighting their dynamic capabilities and expanding their reach for various applications.

Disordered Photonic Time Crystals

Yonatan Sharabi et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the propagation of electromagnetic waves in disordered photonic time crystals. We observed that in spatially homogeneous media with randomly changing refractive indices, the group velocity of a pulse decreases exponentially, eventually reaching a complete stop while the intensity experiences exponential growth. These effects are greatly influenced by the Floquet band structure of the photonic time crystal, with the highest sensitivity to disorder occurring in superluminal modes. The ensemble statistics were also analyzed, showing similarities to Anderson localization with single parameter scaling.

Universal Statistics of Waves in a Random Time-Varying Medium

R. Carminati et al.

Summary: The study shows that waves propagating in a medium with randomly fluctuating wave velocity in time exhibit a statistical distribution of wave energy that is log-normal at long times, with average energy growing exponentially. At shorter times and weak disorder, the energy follows a negative exponential distribution, with an average value growing linearly with time. This universal statistical behavior bridges the fields of wave propagation in time-disordered and space-disordered media.

Spectral causality and the scattering of waves

Zeki Hayran et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that similar input-output relations can be achieved in the spectral domain by utilizing time-modulated non-Hermitian photonic systems. By exploring time-modulated metamaterials that follow causality, the research investigates the impact on various applications and proposes new tools for extending the field of temporally modulated metamaterials into the complex realm.
