Cataract Formation by Near-infrared Radiation in Rabbits

Tsutomu Okuno et al.

Summary: Studies have shown an increased prevalence of cataracts in workers in the glass and steel industries, which is associated with exposure to infrared radiation. By exposing pigmented rabbit eyes to 808 nm infrared, it was found that this type of IR is absorbed by the iris, leading to cataract formation as predicted by Goldmann theory.
