Morphological and functional variability in central and subcentral motor cortex of the human brain

Nicole Eichert et al.

Summary: A long-established link between anatomy and function in the somatomotor system in the mammalian cerebral cortex has been found. The morphology of the central sulcus can predict the location of functional activation peaks related to movement of different effectors in individuals, while the morphological variation in the subcentral region and its relationship to function is still unknown. Robust relationships between morphology of the central and subcentral sulcal segments and movement of different effectors were demonstrated, with the anterior subcentral sulcus not being continuous in the majority of participants. This underlying anatomy variability may explain inconsistent findings regarding the ventral larynx area in the subcentral cortex.

Human larynx motor cortices coordinate respiration for vocal-motor control

Michel Belyk et al.

Summary: Vocal flexibility, particularly in speaking and singing, is a key feature of the human species thanks to the neural pathways and coordination in the brain. Two larynx motor areas have been identified in the human brain, with their functional roles in speech motor control still under investigation. The integration of laryngeal and respiratory systems in these areas plays a crucial role in vocalization and may have implications for the evolution of speech.

Primate Vocal Communication and the Evolution of Speech

Julia Fischer

Summary: Studies of nonhuman primate communication are often motivated by shedding light on the evolution of speech. The vocal repertoires of nonhuman primates are evolutionarily highly conserved, and calls may vary in relation to the internal state of the caller or social experience. While signalers are sensitive to the relation between their own actions and receivers' responses, nonhuman primates do not seem to express or comprehend communicative or informative intent.
