Admissions Is Not Enough: The Racial Achievement Gap in Medical Education

Alana C. Jones et al.

Summary: The achievement gap refers to the disparity in academic performance between White and underrepresented minority students, which also affects medical education. Underrepresented minority medical students are more likely to face delays in graduation and course failure, as well as lower scores on licensing examinations, impacting their career trajectory. The recent transition of USMLE Step 1 scoring to pass/fail has implications for addressing this disparity and promoting equality in medical education.
