Analysis of clinical characteristics of severe pertussis in infants and children: a retrospective study

Pertussis Infants Needing Mechanical Ventilation and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: Single-Center Retrospective Series in Vietnam

Ta Anh Tuan et al.

Summary: This study found that around one third of infants with pertussis who received mechanical ventilation died. Those who received extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support typically had higher leukocyte counts, were more frequently diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, and had more advanced acute kidney injury stages. Higher Vasoactive-Inotropic Score and advanced stages of acute kidney injury were associated with a greater risk of mortality among patients with pertussis.

Emerging macrolide resistance in Bordetella pertussis in mainland China: Findings and warning from the global pertussis initiative

Ye Feng et al.

Summary: Whooping cough, caused by Bordetella pertussis, has seen a resurgence in mainland China with the emergence of macrolide-resistant strains. The primary treatment is macrolides, but alternative agents are urgently needed. International surveillance and prevention measures are crucial in preventing the spread of the resistant organism.
