Screening strategies for the diagnosis of asymptomatic Leishmania infection in dialysis patients as a model for kidney transplant candidates

Giorgia Comai et al.

Summary: Visceral leishmaniasis caused by L. infantum is increasingly affecting solid organ transplant recipients in Mediterranean Europe. A study in northeastern Italy found a 15.9% prevalence of asymptomatic Leishmania infection among dialysis patients, highlighting the importance of screening strategies for transplant candidates in endemic areas.

Prevalence of asymptomatic visceral leishmaniasis in human and dog, Benishangul Gumuz regional state, Western Ethiopia

Shibabaw Bejano et al.

Summary: The study in the Benishangul-Gumuz region of Ethiopia revealed a high prevalence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and identified risk factors associated with infection. Factors like having a dog in the household, being male, residing in certain areas, and specific occupations showed a strong positive association with LST positivity. The findings underline the importance of establishing early containment plans to prevent the spread of VL.

Asymptomatic Leishmania infection in HIV-positive outpatients on antiretroviral therapy in Pernambuco, Brazil

Diego Lins Guedes et al.

Summary: A study conducted in a VL-endemic area in Brazil found a prevalence of 9.11% of asymptomatic HIV-Leishmania coinfection among HIV-positive patients. Factors such as race, marital status, and HIV viral load were significantly different between HIV mono-infected and HIV-Leishmania coinfected groups.

Detection of asymptomatic Leishmania infection in Bangladesh by antibody and antigen diagnostic tools shows an association with post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) patients

Sophie I. Owen et al.

Summary: A study conducted in Bangladesh on 720 household and neighboring contacts of 276 VL and PKDL index cases found that 9.6% of the participants had asymptomatic infection detected through various diagnostic tests. The study suggests that Leishmania antigen ELISA on urine may be useful for monitoring transmission and surveillance in an elimination setting.

Seropositivity of Visceral leishmaniasis on people of VL endemic three districts of Nepal

Shaila Basnyat et al.

Summary: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a life-threatening disease caused by Leishmania donovani, transmitted by sand flies in Nepal. Seroprevalence study in three endemic districts found asymptomatic individuals as potential reservoirs for VL transmission, with higher infection rates in children under 15. Family members of diagnosed VL cases did not show seropositivity.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of cytokine release assays to confirm the cure of visceral leishmaniasis in patients with autoimmune disease and determine the prevalence of asymptomatic Leishmania infection in similar patients. The results showed that 21.27% of those without a clinical history of leishmaniasis had been in contact with the parasite.
