A persistently low level of atmospheric oxygen in Earth's middle age

Xiao-Ming Liu et al.

Summary: This research reveals the evolution of atmospheric oxygen levels throughout Earth's geological history, with a particular focus on the mid-Proterozoic Eon. The results support a significant rise in atmospheric oxygen level following the Great Oxidation Event, followed by a relatively stable pO(2) of around 1% of present atmospheric level during most of the Proterozoic Eon.

Evaluation and optimisation of the dissolution method for bulk analysis of carbonate neodymium isotopic composition based on chemical leaching of carbonate certified reference materials

Youlian Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted chemical leaching experiments on carbonate reference materials to evaluate and optimize the dissolution method for bulk analysis of carbonate neodymium isotopes. The results showed that dilute acetic acid should be preferentially selected over other acids to dissolve carbonate rocks for Nd isotope analysis. Additionally, the study revealed that carbonate Nd isotopes are minimally affected by clay minerals, but significant Nd contamination can occur from Fe-Mn nodules.

Dissolved neodymium and hafnium isotopes and rare earth elements in the Congo River Plume: Tracing and quantifying continental inputs into the southeast Atlantic

Peer Rahlf et al.

Summary: The study presents the first combined dissolved neodymium and hafnium isotope and rare earth element concentration distributions following the Congo River plume into the South Atlantic Ocean. It shows the significant impact of Congo River freshwater on trace metal distributions in the eastern south Atlantic surface waters, highlighting the importance of understanding element fluxes and transport mechanisms for marine ecosystem studies.

A transient swing to higher oxygen levels in the atmosphere and oceans at ∼1.4 Ga

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: Based on the analysis of carbonate rocks from North China dating back to approximately 1.44 billion years ago, it is suggested that there was a transient global shift to higher oxygen levels in the atmosphere and oceans around 1.4 billion years ago.

Organic matter mineralization in modern and ancient ferruginous sediments

Andre Friese et al.

Summary: Research shows that methanogenesis dominates organic matter mineralization in ferruginous sediment, even with abundant reactive iron phases present. The coexistence of ferric iron and methane indicates a lack of iron-dependent methane oxidation. This suggests that methane production in low-oxygen Archaean and Proterozoic oceans could have significantly influenced Earth's early climate.

Controls on metal enrichment in ferromanganese crusts: Temporal changes in oceanic metal flux or phosphatisation?

Pierre Josso et al.

Summary: Oceanic hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts are important repositories for metals essential for decarbonisation, with phosphatisation not the primary driving mechanism for metal enrichment and depletion. Changing metal fluxes, rather than secondary mineralisation processes, control the primary metal content in Fe-Mn crust deposits.

Rare earth element geochemistry of carbonates as a proxy for deep-time environmental reconstruction

Yanyan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study used REY to reconstruct the deep-time depositional environments of carbonates, classifying them into five categories and analyzing the REY characteristics in different environments. The results showed that the DOUNCE carbonates of the Ediacaran period exhibit characteristics of an intrashelf lagoonal environment with freshwater input.
