The Svalbard Eocene-Oligocene (?) Central Basin succession: Sedimentation patterns and controls

William Helland-Hansen et al.

Summary: The study synthesized data from the post early Eocene foreland basin succession in Svalbard to generate an updated depositional model, revealing a foredeep setting governed by flexural loading with high sedimentation rates and uncommon relative sea-level falls. The basin fill had a bipartite structure with shelf and shelf-edge deltas, clinothems, and fans, suggesting a wedge top basin in the mature stage. Time-equivalent deposits were found in other regions, indicating potential southerly diversion of sediment-routing.

Transient ocean oxygenation at end-Permian mass extinction onset shown by thallium isotopes

Sean M. Newby et al.

Summary: The study analyzed thallium isotopes from three widely distributed sites in the Panthalassa ocean basin to track marine oxygenation changes before and during the end-Permian mass extinction (EPME). The results show evidence of deoxygenation onset well before EPME compared to other proxy records, with a brief return to more oxygenated conditions during the extinction event. This suggests a complex redox scenario with rapid changes in oceanic oxygenation leading to variable biotic stresses.
