Visible Light-Driven Radical-Mediated C-C Bond Cleavage/Functionalization in Organic Synthesis

Xiao-Ye Yu et al.

Summary: In recent years, visible light photoredox-catalyzed radical-mediated C-C bond cleavage reactions have emerged as a powerful alternative method for overcoming the thermodynamic and kinetic barrier of C-C bond cleavage in diverse molecular scaffolds. These reactions provide an efficient way to construct structurally diverse molecular skeletons, contributing to the development in the field of synthetic organic chemistry.

Oxidative α-C-C Bond Cleavage of 2° and 3° Alcohols to Aromatic Acids with O2 at Room Temperature via Iron Photocatalysis

Zongnan Zhang et al.

Summary: This research achieved the oxidation of secondary and tertiary alcohols through alpha-C-C bond cleavage using a blue-light-driven iron catalyst, with the first example of oxygenation of simple tertiary alcohols reported. The iron catalyst and blue light are crucial for the formation of highly reactive O radicals and subsequent alpha-C-C bond cleavages.

Photocatalytic C-H activation and the subtle role of chlorine radical complexation in reactivity

Qiaomu Yang et al.

Summary: The reported carbon-hydrogen (C-H) activation of alkanes is actually mediated by the photocatalyst [NEt4](2)[CeCl6], and RO center dot are not intermediates. The generation of chlorine radical (Cl center dot) in the photocatalytic system is found to be the rate-limiting step. Density functional theory calculations support the formation of [Cl center dot][alcohol] adducts, which can manifest a masked RO center dot character.

Iron-Catalyzed Photoinduced LMCT: A 1° C-H Abstraction Enables Skeletal Rearrangements and C(sp3)-H Alkylation

Yi Cheng Kang et al.

Summary: In this study, an iron-catalyzed method was developed for skeletal rearrangement reactions from unactivated C(sp(3))-H bonds to access alkylated products. By utilizing photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer, a chlorine radical is generated at the iron center to abstract electron-rich C(sp(3))-H bonds, leading to the formation and rearrangement of alkyl radicals for the synthesis of alkylated products. Simple adjustments to the reaction conditions enable the selective synthesis of directly alkylated or rearranged-alkylated products.
