Evaluating the potential of soil bacterial tetraether proxies in westerlies dominating western Pamirs, Tajikistan and implications for paleoenvironmental reconstructions

Chihao Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed that brGDGT-based proxies in surface soils from the windward slope of the western Pamirs in Tajikistan have significant correlations with measured pH values, indicating their potential for pH reconstructions in the region. The results suggest that appropriate proxies and calibrations can be used to reconstruct paleoenvironmental parameters in arid and semi-arid Tajikistan.

Molecular dynamics simulations support the hypothesis that the brGDGT paleothermometer is based on homeoviscous adaptation

B. D. A. Naafs et al.

Summary: Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) are bacterial membrane lipids that are ubiquitous in the environment, and their degree of methylation is correlated with temperature, forming the basis of the brGDGT paleothermometer. Molecular dynamics simulations show that increasing the degree of methylation modulates membrane order and packing, making the membrane less rigid and more fluid. These findings support the hypothesis that the brGDGT paleothermometer is based on homeoviscous adaptation.

The influence of soil chemistry on branched tetraether lipids in mid- and high latitude soils: Implications for brGDGT- based paleothermometry

C. De Jonge et al.

Summary: The soil pH has a significant impact on the distribution of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (BrGDGTs) and bacterial community composition. Changes in soil pH lead to variations in the MBT'(5ME) values, highlighting the importance of considering pH changes in paleoclimate studies.
