Electrical conductance of silicon photonic waveguides

Francesco Zanetto et al.

Summary: Optoelectronic devices in a silicon photonic chip rely on waveguide doping for operation, but the doping level may not always result in the same amount of free carriers due to charges and trap energy states at the Si/SiO2 interface. This study quantifies the effect of free carriers in a waveguide and demonstrates the ability to modify and restore their quantity with proper control of chip substrate potential or by integrating a specific metal gate. This research highlights the linearity achievable in conductance modulation for potential applications.
