High-fidelity nano-FTIR spectroscopy by on-pixel normalization of signal harmonics

Lars Mester et al.

Summary: Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and Fourier transform infrared nanospectroscopy (nano-FTIR) are essential tools for nanocharacterization of composite materials. Indirect tip illumination via far-field reflection and scattering at the sample can produce signals not present at the tip position, requiring recognition and elimination of such artifacts for correct interpretation of images and spectra. This can be achieved through a simple signal normalization step to strengthen the analytical capabilities of s-SNOM and nano-FTIR spectroscopy.

Nanoscale Spectroscopy of Dielectric Properties of Mica

Alireza Fali et al.

Summary: The infrared dielectric properties of exfoliated muscovite mica on silicon and SiO2 substrates were studied using near-field nano-FTIR spectroscopy. The results show anisotropic behavior and different hyperbolic behaviors in different frequency ranges, with strong thickness and wavelength dependence. The experimental nano-FTIR spectra agree well with analytical model calculations when out-of-plane dielectric values were used.

Nanotextured Dynamics of a Light-Induced Phase Transition in VO2

Aaron J. Sternbach et al.

Summary: Transient nanotextured heterogeneity in vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films during a light-induced insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) was investigated, revealing hidden disorder and inequivalent twin domain structures. Coexisting metallic and insulating regions were observed during the IMT, anchored to twin domain interfaces and grain boundaries. Photoinduced nucleation was deterministically anchored to predefined nanoscopic regions, allowing monitoring of emergent metallicity in space and time.

Effect of sample anisotropy on scanning near-field optical microscope images

S. T. Chui et al.

Summary: Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) is widely used for characterizing strongly correlated electronic, two dimensional, and plasmonic materials, with great potential for biological applications. This study generalized a method for extracting the near-field scattering signal from isotropic systems to anisotropic dielectrics, and achieved good agreement with experimental measurements on modestly anisotropic sapphire. The findings are important for understanding the near-field response of low damping, anisotropic polaritonic states in dielectric media.

Nano-imaging of strain-tuned stripe textures in a Mott crystal

A. S. McLeod et al.

Summary: The study reveals that 4d transition metal perovskites are sensitive to stimuli such as strain, temperature, and electrical current. Particularly, a striped texture of coexisting insulating and metallic domains was observed in bilayer ruthenate single crystals near the first-order Mott transition temperature of approximately 95K. Additionally, the anisotropic nucleation and growth of these domains were found to be controlled through a spontaneous Jahn-Teller distortion, with susceptibility to strain and temperature at the transition threshold.
