Breaking voltage-bandwidth limits in integrated lithium niobate modulators using micro-structured electrodes

Prashanta Kharel et al.

Summary: Thin-film lithium niobate modulators offer improved voltage-bandwidth performance but face challenges in high-frequency electro-optic performance due to increased microwave losses from reduced electrode gaps. By utilizing micro-structured electrodes, researchers achieved a record combination of low RF half-wave voltage (V-pi) of 1.3 V while maintaining electro-optic response with 1.8 dB roll-off at 50 GHz.

Hybrid material integration in silicon photonic integrated circuits

Swapnajit Chakravarty et al.

Summary: This paper reviews existing integration strategies of III-V materials and presents a route towards hybrid integration of III-V and ferroelectrics on the same chip. Adiabatic transformation of the optical mode enables efficient transfer of optical modal energies for maximum overlap with the ferroelectric media. Preliminary designs are presented for foundry compatible hybrid integration route of diverse functionalities on silicon PICs.

Wideband thin-film lithium niobate modulator with low half-wave-voltage length product

Xuecheng Liu et al.

Summary: A novel TFLN electro-optic modulator with a hybrid waveguide, capacitive loaded traveling-wave electrodes, and a quartz substrate has been proposed and demonstrated. This modulator shows low optical loss, low half-wave-voltage length product, and a high operating frequency with a 3.4 V half-wave voltage and less than 2 dB roll-off in an electro-optic response at 67 GHz.
