This paper introduces a cost-effective tree architecture that enables flexible communication between ONUs, with higher wavelength utilization and lower transmission latency. The proposed scheme creatively utilizes proximal nodes and spatial isolation to improve the efficiency of communication signals within the same WDM-PON.
This paper proposes a cost-effective tree architecture supporting flexible communication between any optical network units (ONUs). The proposed ONU-communication scheme has higher wavelength utilization and lower transmission latency. By creatively introducing proximal node (PN) and skillfully utilizing spatial isolation, the intra-communication signals of ONUs within the same wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PON) can reuse the wavelengths of the downstream signals. By this way, the wavelength resources are saved on the premise of ensuring the communication flexibility. Meanwhile, the intra-communication signal can be directly transmitted back to the destination ONU via PN which is much closer to ONU, so that both the transmission latency and link loss of the signal can be reduced. In addition, by using conventional devices to design PN modularly, each user only needs to pay a lower cost to simultaneously realize the intra-communication of ONUs within the same WDM-PON as well as the inter-communication of ONUs in different WDM-PONs. Finally, by the simulation experiment, the effectiveness of the proposed network is demonstrated.
