The Limits of Incentives in Economic Matching Procedures

Summary: The study shows the prevalence of preference misrepresentation in matching markets, especially in high-stakes matching environments. Evidence suggests that applicants to graduate programs in psychology in Israel often falsely report a preference for avoiding funding, despite it being a positive signal of ability. Other types of preference misrepresentation are also common and are associated with weaker applicants.
