Extending limits for wave power absorption by axisymmetric devices

R. Porter et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the theoretical possibility of extending the capture width for axisymmetric wave energy converters using generalized modes of motion. By applying a continuum approximation to the paddle motion, it is shown that a cylinder of fixed size can absorb as much power as demanded from an incident wave, although practical limitations of linear theory may be quickly reached as demand increases. The study does not delve into these limits in detail or explore further practical design considerations.

Numerical analysis of the hydrodynamic scaling effects for the Wavestar wave energy converter

Christian Windt et al.

Summary: Scaled model tests are important in the development of WECs, with numerical wave tanks providing tools to overcome scaling effects seen in physical wave tanks. This study investigated hydrodynamic scaling effects for a heaving buoy WEC, showing significant scaling effects on the viscous component of hydrodynamic loads but relatively little impact on system dynamics and total loads.

Wave energy in the UK: Status review and future perspectives

Siya Jin et al.

Summary: This review examines the progress of wave energy in the UK and suggests key steps that need to be taken for it to contribute to the Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050. It emphasizes the excellent wave resources and advanced techniques in the UK, as well as the important roles that government and industry support play in securing a leading position in wave energy. The potential benefits of wave energy for decarbonizing UK industry and the necessary steps to achieve its potential in the next 30 years are also discussed.
