Seasonal oceanic variability on meso- and submesoscales: a turbulence perspective

Boris Galperin et al.

Summary: The seasonal variability of upper ocean on meso- and submesoscales is investigated using the quasi-normal scale elimination theory. The theory shows a bi-component structure in the velocity spectra, with the amplitudes determined by Coriolis parameter and energy flux. The theoretical results align well with observational data and demonstrate changes in the bi-component structure and seasonal variability.

Variability and upward trend in the kinetic energy of western boundary currents over the last century: impacts from barystatic and dynamic sea level change

Tal Ezer et al.

Summary: The study identified gravitational, rotational and deformational effects as responsible for multidecadal variations in sea level, while changes related to wind patterns and oceanic kinetic energy were mainly seen at interannual and decadal scales. Comparisons in western boundary currents regions showed a general upward trend in oceanic kinetic energy, while trends in wind kinetic energy varied widely across different regions.

Global changes in oceanic mesoscale currents over the satellite altimetry record

Josue Martinez-Moreno et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that mesoscale eddy variability has increased in eddy-rich regions but decreased in the tropical ocean over the past few decades. These changes have significant implications for the exchange of heat and carbon between the ocean and atmosphere.

Data-driven reconstruction reveals large-scale ocean circulation control on coastal sea level

Sonke Dangendorf et al.

Summary: Research on historical and projected coastal sea-level change reveals that ocean dynamics, including density fluctuations, have a significant impact. By analyzing global tide-gauge records, a reconstruction of coastal sea-level budget over nine regions is possible, indicating that ocean circulation has been a dominant factor in sea-level variability since 1960.

Future changes to the upper ocean Western Boundary Currents across two generations of climate models

Alex Sen Gupta et al.

Summary: Western Boundary Currents play a crucial role in the transportation of heat, dissolved gases, and nutrients in the ocean. Climate models, despite their differences in resolution and structure, generally succeed in reproducing large-scale circulation features. Future projections indicate consistent changes in many currents across models, with potential explanations lying in projected changes in large-scale surface winds.
