Dietary modulation of large extracellular vesicles: the good and the bad for human health

High-fat diet-induced upregulation of exosomal phosphatidylcholine contributes to insulin resistance

Summary: This study reveals that lean mice become insulin resistant after being administered exosomes isolated from the feces of obese mice fed a high-fat diet or from patients with type II diabetes. The altered lipid composition of exosomes from high-fat diet-fed mice affects the uptake by macrophages and hepatocytes, leading to inhibition of the insulin signaling pathway. Exosome-derived phosphatidylcholine activates AhR, inhibiting the expression of genes essential for activation of the insulin signaling pathway.

Non-fermented pasteurized milk may shorten lifespan by activating mTORC1 signaling, while fermented milk products can degrade harmful substances.

Further investigation into the impact of exosomal RNAs from dietary interventions is warranted.
