Glycemic Index, Glycemic Load, and Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality

David J. A. Jenkins et al.

Summary: In this study involving 137,851 participants from five continents aged between 35 and 70 years, it was found that a diet with a high glycemic index was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death. Consuming a diet with a high glycemic index was linked to higher risk of major cardiovascular events and death, even among participants without preexisting cardiovascular disease.

International tables of glycemic index and glycemic load values 2021: a systematic review

Fiona S. Atkinson et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed and compiled reliable GI values from over 4000 items, with a part of the values derived using the methodology recommended by the International Standards Organization. Dairy products, legumes, pasta, and fruits were generally low-GI foods, while cereals and cereal products, including whole-grain or whole-meal versions, showed wide variation in GI values. Most varieties of potato were high-GI foods.

Effect of low glycaemic index or load dietary patterns on glycaemic control and cardiometabolic risk factors in diabetes: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Laura Chiavaroli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to update the clinical practice guidelines for nutrition therapy of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. Comparisons of 29 trial studies involving 1617 participants with moderately controlled type 1 and type 2 diabetes showed that low GI/GL dietary patterns resulted in significant improvements in glycemic control, blood lipids, adiposity, and inflammation.
