Multiple Alfven eigenmodes induced by energetic electrons and nonlinear mode couplings in EAST radio-frequency heated H-mode plasmas

N. Zhao et al.

Summary: Multiple coherent electromagnetic modes with frequencies ranging from 20 to 300 kHz have been observed in radio-frequency heated H-mode plasmas of the EAST tokamak. These modes are primarily driven by energetic electrons (EEs) and exhibit strong nonlinear interactions between branches along with the generation of harmonics. The gyrokinetic eigenvalue simulations support the identification of these modes as Alfven eigenmodes, with different characteristics in low-frequency and high-frequency ranges.

Gyrokinetic simulation of low-frequency Alfvenic modes in DIII-D tokamak

G. J. Choi et al.

Summary: Global gyrokinetic simulations have found a beta-induced Alfven eigenmode and a low-frequency mode co-existing in the DIII-D tokamak experiments. The low-frequency mode can be excited without fast ions, has a structure consistent with experimental observations, and is not the conventional Alfven-acoustic eigenmode as shown by an antenna scan. The simulated mode structures and parametric dependencies are in agreement with experimental findings.

Slow manifolds of classical Pauli particle enable structure-preserving geometric algorithms for guiding center dynamics

Jianyuan Xiao et al.

Summary: Since the introduction of variational symplectic integrators, structure-preserving geometric algorithms have become a research focus in plasma physics. Utilizing the slow manifolds of classical Pauli particles enables the achievement of long-term stability and accuracy in guiding center dynamics, overcoming challenges associated with the use of variational symplectic integrators on degenerate guiding center Lagrangians.

Effects of Plasma Diamagnetic Drift on Alfven Continua and Discrete Eigenmodes in Tokamaks

J. Bao et al.

Summary: The study shows that the omega(*) causes a frequency upshift in both Alfven continua and AEs, breaking the ion-electron symmetry of the ideal-MHD model results. An approximate solution for Alfven continua with the omega(*) effect is provided with high accuracy, and it is found that the eigenmode structure of TAE is less impacted by the omega(*) effect compared to the real frequency. Incorporating the diamagnetic drift effects of background plasmas and energetic particles is crucial for validating theoretical and simulation models against experiments.
