Physics and technology considerations for the deuterium-tritium fuel cycle and conditions for tritium fuel self sufficiency

Mohamed Abdou et al.

Summary: The tritium aspects of the DT fuel cycle pose challenging feasibility and attractiveness issues in fusion system development. Current state-of-the-art physics and technology are unable to satisfy the principal requirements for tritium self-sufficiency within fusion systems. A powerful fuel cycle dynamics model has been developed to quantify goals and define specific areas for physics and technology R&D.

A general stellarator version of the systems code PROCESS

J. Lion et al.

Summary: By modifying the fusion reactor system code Process, we are able to describe a general class of stellarator power plants based on stellarator coil-sets and MHD plasma equilibrium. The new version of Process allows for each stellarator configuration to enter the system code via a set of effective parameters, which can be calculated in advance for use in new scaling models. Two applications of the new Process version are demonstrated, including applying the code to three different reactor-size stellarator devices with varying aspect ratios and optimizing three coil-sets for the same equilibrium with different numbers of coils.

Understanding detachment of the W7-X island divertor

Y. Feng et al.

Summary: The behavior of the W7-X island divertor under detached conditions is re-examined and compared with experimental results, showing common trends such as decreasing target heat load, falling target particle flux, and increasing divertor neutral pressure. In addition, a decrease in electron temperature is observed during detachment. Through a physical explanation and quantitative analysis using the EMC3-Eirene code, it is shown how the island divertor plasma self-regulates to maintain balance under detached conditions.
