Development of Real-Time Analysis System of Selenium Ion in Solutions by Using Microextraction and Fluorescence Microscopy

Aileen Brandt et al.

Summary: Development of advanced analytical methods for trace selenium (Se) ions in wastewater is crucial in avoiding biological and environmental burdens due to Se pollution. A microanalytical methodology was developed for rapid and efficient extraction, real-time monitoring, and extraction kinetic analysis of Se(IV) ions. The microsystem showed a submicromolar detection limit for Se(IV), a significant extraction rate constant, and a short time to reach equilibrium, making it a valuable technique for microfluidic extraction kinetics and real-time monitoring of toxic selenium ions.

Summary: Thermal lens microscopy (TLM) utilizes heat-induced changes in refractive index for sensitive detection of nonfluorescent analytes. Integration with micro-/nanofluidic devices enhances specificity and sample manipulation capabilities, offering potential for continuous, real-time, label-free, specific, and ultrasensitive detection in various applications.
