Sex-dependent effects of endocannabinoid modulation of conditioned fear extinction in rats

Maria Morena et al.

Summary: The endocannabinoid system has different effects on fear extinction in males and females, with increased AEA signaling impairing extinction in females, while inhibition of 2-AG hydrolysis promoting active fear responses. Sex- and brain region-specific changes were also observed in AEA and 2-AG levels after extinction training. These findings may have implications for sex-specific therapeutics in trauma-related disorders.

Sex differences and the endocannabinoid system in pain

Henry L. Blanton et al.

Summary: Cannabis use, particularly for pain relief, is increasing among women. Sex differences in response to cannabinoids have been observed in preclinical studies, with female rodents generally being more sensitive to Delta(9)-THC. Factors such as metabolism, cannabinoid receptor expression, and ovarian hormones may contribute to these differences. Further research into the role of sex in endocannabinoid system function is needed as we continue to study the impact of cannabinoids in various disease states, including chronic pain.
