Large-scale functional ultrasound imaging of the spinal cord reveals in-depth spatiotemporal responses of spinal nociceptive circuits in both normal and inflammatory states

Julien Claron et al.

Summary: This study used functional ultrasound imaging and ultrasound localization microscopy to reveal the characteristics of hemodynamic response in the rat spinal cord through natural or electrical stimulation of different categories of afferent fibers. The research found that the responses are fiber-specific, and the C-fiber response is dependent on N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor mechanism, showing enhanced response in inflammatory conditions.

Imaging the response to deep brain stimulation in rodent using functional ultrasound

Rohit Nayak et al.

Summary: This study explored the feasibility of using functional ultrasound imaging to visualize cerebral activation associated with thalamic deep brain stimulation in rodents. The results showed that fUS imaging can identify DBS-evoked cerebral cortex activation, with low frequency stimulation having a higher activation effect on the primary motor cortex compared to higher frequencies. This preliminary study is an important step towards conducting real-time functional ultrasound imaging of DBS in awake and behaving animal models.

Bedside functional monitoring of the dynamic brain connectivity in human neonates

Jerome Baranger et al.

Summary: This study utilizes functional ultrasound for bedside deep brain resting-state functional connectivity imaging in neonates, revealing interhemispheric connectivity in preterm newborns and fine-grain correlations within brain tissue. Furthermore, decreased occurrence of thalamo-cortical networks is observed in very preterm neonates compared to control term newborns, suggesting potential applications for early brain function monitoring.

Behavioural relevance of spontaneous, transient brain network interactions in fMRI

D. Vidaurre et al.

Summary: The study found that time-varying fMRI functional connectivity is associated with specific behavioral traits, independently of anatomical factors. While time-averaged functional connectivity explains the largest proportion of variability in the fMRI signal between individuals, some aspects of intelligence can only be explained by time-varying functional connectivity.

Optogenetic fUSI for brain-wide mapping of neural activity mediating collicular-dependent behaviors

Arnau Sans-Dublanc et al.

Summary: Neuronal cell types in the brain form circuits that guide behavior, with certain collicular cell types being able to trigger specific behaviors and activate different brain regions. The study also found that previously unrecognized brain regions, such as the PPnT, are involved in defensive behaviors. Neuronal recordings showed that neurons in downstream nuclei preferentially respond to threatening visual stimuli.

Functional ultrasound imaging of the spreading activity following optogenetic stimulation of the rat visual cortex

M. Provansal et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the detection of deep optogenetic activations in anesthetized rats' V1 using fUS imaging. The optogenetic specificity of these activations and their neuronal origin were confirmed through electrophysiological recordings. Furthermore, it was shown that the optogenetic response initiated in V1 spreads to downstream (LGN) and upstream (V2) visual areas.

Neurovascular Coupling in Development and Disease: Focus on Astrocytes

Teresa L. Stackhouse et al.

Summary: Neurovascular coupling is a crucial mechanism that matches the high energy demand of the brain with a supply of energy substrates from the blood. The strength and reliability of neurovascular coupling are essential for non-invasive human neuroimaging techniques. The development and maturation of the neurovascular unit, particularly astrocytes and the vascular network, play a key role in functional maturation of neurovascular coupling.

Predicting attention across time and contexts with functional brain connectivity

Hayoung Song et al.

Summary: The ability to sustain attention varies across individuals and within a person over time. Models based on static functional brain connectivity patterns show promise for predicting individual differences in sustained attention. Time-varying functional brain connectivity can predict fluctuations in attention in controlled and naturalistic task contexts.
